Strokes Swimming Instructor - Perry Barr, Birmingham
Job Type: Permanent - Full Time / Part Time
Salary: Grade B - £28,598 - £34,434 per annum pro rata (Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review)
We have 10 positions available across Handsworth, Kingstanding, and Linden Road for both full-time and part-time opportunities.
About the Role:
We are looking for dedicated Swimming Instructors to deliver a high-quality programme of swimming lessons across various ability levels, aligned with our “Strokes for Life” Swimming Instruction Scheme. This role requires a passionate professional who can inspire confidence, skill, and a love of swimming in learners while maintaining excellent standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver and present the Strokes Swimming Instruction Scheme effectively on a day-to-day basis, reporting to the Site Manager.
- Provide advice and support to the Site Manager on the development of the swimming instruction programme.
- Liaise closely with the Swimming Co-ordinator to align course content and activity programmes specific to the site.
- Maintain strong, supportive relationships with parents, encouraging retention within the programme.
- Validate badges and certificates related to the Strokes Instruction Scheme and coordinate their issue with the Swimming Co-ordinator.
- Work with the Swimming Co-ordinator and Site Manager to access appropriate staff training and personal development, ensuring qualifications are maintained.
- Stay updated with the latest developments in swimming and teaching techniques by attending training courses and seminars.
- Undertake other related duties as assigned.
Supervision and Support:
- You will be accountable to the Site Manager / Aquatics Officer.
- You will work within established guidelines with supervisory support and oversight.
Special Conditions:
- This role requires a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
- You must hold recognised Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving qualifications; training will be provided to maintain these qualifications.
- Uniform will be provided and must be worn on duty, adhering to the appropriate code of appearance.
- Alternative duties may be assigned during pool closures, in agreement with the Site Manager.
- Evening and weekend work will be required; salary includes payment for irregular hours and shift working, with weekend enhancements where applicable.

- Qualified Swimming Instructor with recognised teaching and lifesaving certifications.
- Passionate about teaching swimming and promoting water safety.
- Strong communication skills, with an ability to engage learners and parents alike.
- Committed to professional development and maintaining high standards.
- Reliable, adaptable, and willing to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
- A team player who contributes positively to the overall programme.
